Dr. Jay Paap
Using CI to Support Innovation
Tools to Help Organizations Compete with Intelligence
Competitive Intelligence (CI) and innovation are two powerful tools that firms can use to grow their businesses. Unfortunately, many fail to understand the critical link between them. This talk will explain the logic of CI and the dynamics of innovation to show how they can work together to drive growth.
How do CI and innovation fit together? Too often models of innovation start with screening ideas, and the role of CI is seen as secondary. Such models are wrong. Research conducted at MIT for NASA uncovered an important insight -- innovation starts with intelligence, not ideas! Intelligence on expected customer requirements, on possible new technologies, and the competitive environment -- these are the where good ideas come from and the starting points of innovation. The message of this talk is simple and clear: Any organization wanting to innovate needs to recognize the central role of CI.
The workshop will be led by Dr. Jay Paap, a SCIP Fellow, a CI practitioner for over three decades, and a much in demand speaker who regularly presents on innovation and CI to executive audiences around the world. Jay will draw on his research and consulting work with hundreds of firms in integrating CI into their innovation programs. His talk will cover three main areas, and provide the basis for an extended dialogue with attendees following the presentation:
How does innovation work?
How does CI work, and why is it so critical to innovation?
What CI tools and techniques are most useful in supporting innovation?
